Wartime coins of occupied Belgium, 1943 (set of 5 coins). Zinc. The second world war started on 3rd September 1939, with Britain declaring war on Germany provoked by the German attack on Poland on 1st September. Germany swiftly attacked France and Flanders (an area now contained in modern-day Belgium, and the Netherlands) by using armor through hilly terrain in what they called a "blitzkrieg". But by 1943, the Germans were short on most metal and mineral resources for their munition industry. In fact, the copper, nickel, and stainless-steel coins were withdrawn and melted for munition, and new coins were minted in Zinc, the only metal they possessed in excess. The coinage of occupied countries was changed to Zinc. Presented here is a set of coins of occupied Belgium of 5c, 10c, 25c, 1 Franc, and 5 Francs. Zinc is not a coinage metal and tends to oxidize on exposure.
